As the uses for ethanol have expanded, so have the number of feedstocks that are used in its production. Corn has traditionally been the feedstock of choice, but growing in popularity is cellulosic biomass processing, which may become the most common ethanol-production process.
Cellulosic biomass – lignocellulose harvested from plant waste or dedicated "energy crops" – has tremendous potential as a feedstock for ethanol production due to its easy availability and potentially high fuel yields. When processed, the cellulosic feedstock yields ethanol that is chemically identical to grain-based ethanol.
